The Okanagan Mountain fire exploded last Friday afternoon, devouring 248 homes and displacing 30,000 Kelowna residents from their homes. The remarkable infrared images taken by Curtis Bennett show the fire flaring up and taking off under the influence of 60 km/h winds. The narrative account is an edited transcript of radio communications between fire fighters taken from the Capital News scanner. It provides a chilling blow-by-blow description of the potentially fatal challenges the firefighters faced trying to stop what became a category six firestorm.

Curtis Bennett: "In 2003 a lightning strike started a forest fire that interfaced with Kelowna, British Columbia a week later. The valley was smoked in making it difficult to fight the fire through the smoke and media reported smoke prohibiting fighting the fire. Our team was working in the valley and offered assistance to the government as well as the City of Kelowna by giving them unobstructed sight through the smoke. All efforts to provide sight through the smoke were refused and on August 21st, 2003 the forest fire moving 300 feet per minute approached Kettle Valley.

As we mapped the approaching fire through the smoke, we flagged down a police car and initiated the evacuation of 15,000. August 22 the fire interfaced with Kelowna and 100s of homes burned.

There was a public inquiry into the government's handling of the fire season and although I presented at the inquiry, the information was edited from the public inquiry because we embarrassed Premier Gordon Campbell's office. When the fire interfaced with Kelowna on August 22, 2003, we were imaging the interface fire through the smoke while fire fighters were left blind through the smoke. Premier Campbell was doing media on Gyro Beach with CTV while we were on the beach imaging the fire. The premier, Rich Coleman and the rest of his entourage looked through the view finder to see the fire through the smoke while both forestry and Kelowna Fire Department were blind because of smoke.

100% of the images you will see here were edited from the public inquiry. The Premier's Office told us the inquiry wasn't allowing pictures, it was an audio only inquiry and the audio feed was lost while I presented. The result was an edited public inquiry so the ability to track forest fires through the smoke were never shared with other departments including Arizona where 19 fire fighters were killed when a fire changed direction."

Officials say it's one of the lowest runs in 50 years

A near record-low sockeye salmon run for Skeena River fisheries has cut off the catch in B.C., but conservation groups say Alaskan fishermen are not pulling in their nets, making the problem worse. "This is probably one of the lowest [runs] we've seen in about 50 years," said Mel Kotyk, North Coast area director for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Only 453,000 sockeye are expected to swim along the Skeena this year, Kotyk said, compared to approximately 2.4 million last year. The DFO has been forced to close all commercial and recreational fisheries for the area. Speculation over the cause of the collapse continues, but Watershed Watch conservationist Aaron Hill is worried that Alaskan fisheries are causing even greater harm.

We wish to highlight our concern over the safety of exposure to microwave radiation from wireless technology, particularly for vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with compromised health. There is growing concern that chronic (long-term) exposure to radiofrequency/microwave radiation from wireless technologies causes damage, particularly genetic damage, cognitive damage, cancer and decreased fertility. There is now substantial evidence of a link between mobile phone use and brain cancer.
